Drive inland to the Sabaragamuwa Province to the elephant sanctuary, located in the village of Pinnawala. Established in 1975, the orphanage started with just 7 elephants. Now it cares for a herd of more than 70.
On this full-day tour, witness a sizable herd of grand Asian elephants up close at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Learn about the valuable work done here and follow the elephants’ daily routine, including feeding time and their twice-daily bath in the local river. Watch local mahouts — elephant handlers — as they take care of these magnificent creatures. You can even see them bottle-feed some of the younger and frailer calves to help build their strength. Once mid-morning comes, enjoy the great spectacle of the mahouts directing the herd down to the river to bathe.
